Dirty Dancing was filmed at Mountain Lake in Virginia
Mountain Lake Hotel was the site for much of the on-location filming of the 1987 hit movie Dirty Dancing which starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The Stone Lodge stood in for "Kellerman's Resort", a fictional mountain retreat in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Like Kellerman's, the real Mountain Lake Hotel Resort also offers many indoor and outdoor activities for guests such as games like table tennis and billiards, water activities like paddle boating, canoeing, and fishing, and dry activities like mountain biking and hiking.
The other site was the 1927 Lake Lure Inn located in Lake Lure, North Carolina.
Mountain Lake is located in Giles County near Pembroke, Virginia. It is about an hour 30 minutes from The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast.
Not to be confused with our Smith Mountain Lake with it's hydroelectric dam which is a man made lake, and now a recreational hot spot.
Here is the Mountain Lake website.
There is a movie currently being filmed at our Smith Mountain Lake. We have had hundreds of movies, TV Shows and Documentaries filmed in our state of Virginia. Visit the VA State Film Office to see some of your favorites filmed here! Your innkeeper's favorite funny movie "What About Bob" starring Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray was filmed at our Smith Mountain Lake and Moneta, Virginia. Dear friends of ours still have pieces of the set in their basement!
Our Governor McDonald is offering Film Incentives to make movies here. Hollywood hunks Shia LaBeouf and Ryan Gosling are apparently interested in director John Hillcoat's film adaptation of "The Wettest County." This is based on a book about Franklin County and the biggest moonshine conspiracy here. I laugh out loud when I tell this to our guests as two Jewish actors from Hollywood are playing a couple of redneck moonshining brothers...
