Remarkable Trees of Virginia - Book Review

Remarkable Trees of Virginia

In a new book, author and lecturer Nancy Ross Hugo, Virginia Tech Department of Forestry extension specialist and professor Jeff Kirwan and photographer Robert Llewellyn beautifully document the oldest, tallest, most historic and best-loved trees in the Commonwealth.

From the Introduction

Trees aren’t the only things that sometimes get bigger than you thought they would. When Jeff Kirwan and I launched the Remarkable Trees of Virginia Project in 2004, we conceived of a book that would celebrate some of Virginia’s finest trees and a website through which people could nominate their favorite trees. Neither of us had any idea we would be sorting through over 1,000 tree nominations and traveling over 20,000 miles to see trees. (Jeff actually walked 300 miles, all the way across the state, to fulfill a lifelong dream and to experience trees and their habitats up close.) Our travels involved almost as many trips to visit trees we decided not to feature as to trees we decided to feature, but no trip seemed unproductive, because for Jeff and me, any day spent among trees is a good day…
BUY THE BOOK: "Remarkable Trees of Virginia" (Hardcover)
From Blue Ridge Country Magazine Review here

The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast is officially in the Blue Ridge Foothills - the Eastern Slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  We are fairly close to an intersecting geography of regions - the Piedmont - is just to our east  Martinsville/Danville - the Highlands are to our West Floyd/Mario, The Shenandoah Valley Roanoke/Lexington is just Northwest of us, and Central Virginia Lynchburg/Richmond.  All of these with differing flora, fauna, animals, and minerals.

Roots Music Y'all?

FREE ALBUM DOWNLOAD - from Scott Baldwin
It's been a bit over three years since New Roanoke Jug Band completed their final album WHEN MY TIME ON EARTH IS DONE.
These eighteen tracks captured the group at it's very best. Two previous releases had leaned heavily on guest stars (but what a cast of guest stars-Mac Traynham, Kirk Sutphin, Kinney Rorrer, Rusty May, Russell Harbaugh, and Jim Barnhill). This recording shows the band, on it's own (well, we used two bass players, since Andrew Thomas was in town and available when Jeff Hofmann wasn't) taking aim at something too daring for most - interpreting some of the most classic primitive gospel tunes ever recorded.

From now until the end of the month you can download this album free from nrjb.bandcamp.com or listen here :

An Edumacation Vacation and Road Trip

Booker T Washington was born a slave in Franklin County Virginia in April 1856.

Born a slave and deprived of any early education, Booker Taliaferro Washington nonetheless became America's foremost black educator of the early 20th century.  He was the first teacher and principal of the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, a school for African-Americans where he championed vocational training as a means for black self-reliance. A well-known orator, Washington also wrote a best-selling autobiography (Up From Slavery, 1901) and advised Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft on race relations.

You can visit the National Park Service Booker T Washington National Monument in our Franklin County Virginia to see the 207 acre farm (Burroughs tobacco plantation) where Booker T was born and spent his childhood, and where he was when the rider came in carrying the Emancipation Proclamation.

What I am about to say will shock you!

"WHO ARE MY FAVORITE GUESTS? An Innkeeper Tells All!"
It's fair to say as Innkeepers we do indeed have favorite guests at our bed and breakfasts, the secret is now out.
The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast has so many wonderful guests it is hard to say who was our favorite, but I can affirm that the ones here right now are always on the top of my list.  You are my favorite, you who have just checked in.  For just a short time, you are our focus, the past guests become a blur after a while, as I say "Joe Guest" and the future guests we have yet to meet...

I went up to strip the rooms after check out today to find the room journal from our guests from Baton Rouge who were here 4 nights.  We just adored them!  Please read to the last line, you will agree it is really lovely, as they are lovely.

"Our main focus was more of a retreat than a "vacation."
We only cranked the car once during our entire stay.  It may sound boring and uneventful for most, but for us it was wonderful.

What Shellie did to make our stay memorable - is greatly appreciated.

There is also a spa not far away, we recommend the couples massage.I do so hope you'll take the time to sit on the porch, and listen to the birds and crickets...notice the butterflies and lightning bugs...and if you're really attentive you may hear the laughter of a child."
View our rooms online here and make your reservation today...we want to meet you and add you to our list!

Online Availability and Online Reservations is an Amenity

Do you use online availability and reservations?
This is a totally off topic blog today, but it is what I eat and breathe here at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast daily.

(The Sierra Suite - what you see is what you get, isn't it lovely? We can even deliver breakfast to your room)
When we first opened, let's face it people were not all that internet savvy.  I mean, slap up a webpage, some images and innformation and bob was your uncle (we really do have an Uncle Bob btw).  Today guests expect much much more, heck my Grandmother who is nearly 87 is online!  Guests expect more than just a guest room photo, but bathrooms, common areas, what is served for breakfast, grounds, etc.  And I say, WHY NOT DANG IT, IT IS 2010!

I want to ask you this, if you are searching online from work, home, library, cell phone for a place to stay, should you not have as much information as possible?  Would you book a room where there are no room photos?  I see this is still the case in the UK where many hoteliers may or may not have one room photo that represents the whole lot and that's that, nothing else.  But ya'll this is America! Here our guests expect private baths, large comfy beds, space to roam, all the extras that make a B&B a special place to stay.

So for that I want to introduce Reservation Key, it is a newer online reservation system which we use here at The Claiborne House.  We love this product, as you can see I have added more room photos directly to each room listing AND the More Details button toward the top.

What can this product do that our old one could not?  Well you can book more than one room at a time.  Case in point:  Inncredible guests here on motorcycles riding The Blue Ridge Parkway.  There were 5 couples, one chap was making the arrangements for the accommodations and booked ALL FIVE ROOMS AT ONCE and got his confirmation right then and there, a done deal.  No calling around, no checking here and there for what is available, can they accommodate 5 couples blah blah blah. Easy Peasy, book your room from any where at any time!

Another feature is a split booking.  Case in point: Our favorite Father Thom from Philly.  Each year he heads down to South Carolina where his Episcopalian Priest Conference is held and he stays with us on the way down and on the way back up.  So he goes online checks the nights he wants, and once again, bada bing bada boom it is a done deal, one confirmation.  In fact our program even remembers him, so on my end it gives me his information and builds on his last booking.

You may or may not realize that innkeepers love their guests, especially the ones we have here at The Claiborne House.  So we want to make your planning as easy as possible, so this is why I say a great online booking system IS INDEED AN AMENITY!  Planning is half the fun of any trip.

So what are you waiting for? Check out our website, our blog, our online reservations for yourself.  We always offer online discounts, so you can save at least $10 online and make it worth your while, even $75 for a midweek stay!  That $75 can rent you a jet ski at the lake or a nice meal downtown Roanoke.

Warning from your innkeeper:  If the website you are looking at does not have nice photos, online reservations, innformation...move onto the next, don't waste your time on dinosaurs.  Like I always say about The Claiborne House B&B:

"THIS AIN'T YOUR GRANDMA'S HOUSE!"

We have modern amenities like WiFi throughout, cable TV, Central A/C and Heat, Parlor and Porches and Ponds for guests to innjoy!  We also have hot home-cooked breakfasts - CONTINENTAL IS NOT SPOKEN HERE!!  Great coffee, check-in baked goodies, complimentary sodas, etc.

"FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS STAY AT HOTELS!"
"BREAK FREE OF THE CHAIN GANG!"

No Ordinary Hike!

If you start at Rock Castle Gorge Trail at the Rocky Knob Recreation Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will find out just how difficult downhill hiking can be.  That's because what goes down must come back up!  On this 10.6 mile loop into Patrick County, and in this case, that means about 1,800 feet.

This trail follows a gated fire road alongside Rock Castle Creek.  Rock Castle Creek tumbles over numerous rocks and forms many small waterfalls as it parallels the Rock Castle Gorge Trail.  The term "Rock Castle" comes from the hexagonal shapes of quartzite crystals found in the hollows, resembling castle towers.

Broad-winged hawk are known to nest within these woods, while wild turkey roam  throughout this area.  Creek beds are good places to spy native brook trout (the lure for local anglers), but also a good place to hunt for salamanders.  More area info see www.visitPatrickCounty.org

The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast held it first ever Photography on The Parkway in April where we had Appalachian Naturalist and Author Fred First guide us through Rock Castle Gorge Trail.  We were there to photograph some of the brilliant spring flowers along the creek and trail.  Pull up a chair and visit Fred's website here http://www.fragmentsfromfloyd.com/
