The Fishin' is Hot Y'all!

IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT GUIDE!
Our delightful guests Pat and Tim stayed with us last week and caught their limit of Striper at Smith Mountain Lake!
Pat with two of her fish near the Dam at Smith Mountain Lake
On Friday they went on a fishing charter with Captain Todd at The Shad Taxi - Professional Striper Fishing Guide (click here for Fishing reports.)

Catch and Release with Capt Todd
Pat and Tim came back with a huge bag of filleted Striped Bass and could not praise Captain Todd enough! They said the other boats fishing Smith Mountain Lake seemed to gravitate toward Captain Todd as they knew he would land the fish. HE DID!

Pat was thrilled with some of the larger Striper that they returned to the water to breed, and took home the smaller tastier fish.  She sent some photos so I could share their fun with y'all!

Smith Mountain Lake is about boating, swimming, sailing, picnicking and lest anyone forget FISHING!

Smith Mountain Lake is a very healthy large lake, we have an hydroelectric dam owned and operated by AEP. The lake was dammed in 1960. We currently have televised bass tournaments at Smith Mountain Lake as well as wake-board and other recreational water tournaments, wine festivals, vintage boat shows and plenty of other activities!

Smith Mountain Lake is Virginia's second largest lake with 500 miles of shoreline. There is a state park on the shores of the lake as well as a few restaurants and marinas.
Isn't this a beautiful fish? Striped Bass caught by Tim at Smith Mountain Lake

Happy Memorial Day from The Claiborne House

We have an historic cemetery behind The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast on High Street
Although no battles were fought in our Franklin County Virginia, more battles were fought in Virginia than any other state. General Jubal A Early was from here, and we have descendants of Carter Lee (the lesser known Lee brother who lived near here) in our town.
Our sincerest gratitude to those who fought for our country!
Thank you Henry Clay Chitwood!
Learn more about General Jubal Early - click here. More has been written about the Civil War than any other subject, so I just gave you a basic wiki link there.  Visit our Franklin County Historical Society when you are in town, it is juts 3 blocks walk from us!

I saw the flags our in the cemetery today and stepped out there to take these images before they are removed at sunset. It is 94 degrees here, our guests are chilling out in their room in the a/c. We sure have it easy, thanks to those who went before us and gave all!

From Preaching to Pork Rinds!

'Anything you want to see, it's here'

Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days will include everything from dueling lawn mowers to preaching to pork rinds.

Demonstrations of all types, including sawmilling, will be available to visitors at the annual Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days.

Demonstrations of all types, including sawmilling, will be available to visitors at the annual Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days.
Among the activities planned for Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days, June 17-19 at Franklin County Recreational Park, are tractor pulls.
Among the activities planned for Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days, June 17-19 at Franklin County Recreational Park, are tractor pulls.
If your dad is one of those chainsaw-wielding, tractor-pulling, history buffs, you might consider treating him to a good time over Father's Day weekend at the Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days.
Now in its eighth year, the three-day event at the Franklin County Recreational Park, is jam-packed with events and demonstrations of all types -- from sawmilling and corn grinding to rock crushing and threshing and baling. Big tractors and smaller riding lawn mowers show off their pulling prowess, vying for bragging rights. Other events include a flea market and auction, gardening seminars, quilting demonstrations, bluegrass music and a horseshoe tournament.
"This is the closest thing that Franklin County has to a fair," said lake resident Bob Camicia, who serves as vice president and is one of the founding members of the non-profit Southwest Virginia Antique Power Festival, Inc., which puts on the event. "This is a fun family environment that has history associated with it."
Admission to next month's event is $5 per person and kids under 12 get in free. Whatever proceeds are left after expenses go back to the club to use to make improvements to the recreation park. Past projects have included constructing a new entrance into the park as well as several buildings that house the group's exhibits, said Camicia.
Several times each day throughout the three-day weekend, participants will get to see the running of the Fairbanks Morse engine. According to Camicia, the 1923 semi-diesel engine "was a monster, 10-feet-high ... estimated to weigh 12,000-13,000 pounds" and was once used to power the Exchange Milling Company in Rocky Mount.
"The engine ran the mill continuously until the late 1950s when the head of the engine cracked and the mill was unable to have it repaired," said Camicia. "After the head was cracked on the engine, the mill was repowered with a 40-horsepower electric motor, and the old Fairbanks Morse engine was just left to grow cobwebs in the basement of the mill."
About four years ago, the group moved the engine to the park and restored it to its original splendor, where it's now on display for spectators.
Not only are there an abundance of demonstrations, but there are bargains galore. At the auction, participants can bid on everything from old spark plugs and tractor parts to washboards and antique tablecloths.
"We never know until Saturday morning what's going to show up," said Camicia. "It's always a cliffhanger. Anything you want to see, it's here."
Participants should be prepared to come hungry, too. There'll be a variety of food vendors selling pies, cakes, pork rinds and more.
"There's a good selection of local, down-home country food," Camicia said.
Folks who need help getting around the massive park during the weekend can rely on shuttle vehicles to take them from the parking lot to the various exhibits and activities.
And if you miss church on Sunday morning, don't fret. Franklin County Administrator Rick Huff is preaching a Sunday morning worship service that also includes music.
The annual event is just one of many the Southwest Virginia Antique Power Festival hosts. In addition to its regular monthly meetings, the group also holds a swap meet and flea market in April and a plow day in the fall.
As the group's website indicates, its mission "is to restore and preserve farm machinery and implements that were used in the agriculture based society of early Southwest Virginia. These efforts are directed toward educating the public and future generations, through displays and demonstrations, about the importance that early farm machinery played in shaping life in Franklin County and surrounding areas."

Southwest Virginia Antique Farm Days will be held Jun 17-19. Admission is $5 per person; children under 12 are free. For an event schedule and more information, visit www.svapf.org.

I just walked up to the doors of the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre, where James Taylor is playing tonight, and was greeted with flyers announcing that Alison Krauss & Union Station feat. Jerry Douglas are playing the RPAT on July 21.
Krauss was last here in 2008, when she and Robert Plant came to the civic center behind their million-selling, Grammy-winning disc “Raising Sand.”
She and Plant gave up on making a follow-up. Plant made his “Band of Joy” album, and Krauss returned to Union Station to make their latest bluegrass/Americana hit, “Paper Airplanes.”
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. June 3. We’ll post ticket price info as soon as we receive it — probably tomorrow, when the civic center makes the official announcement.
UPDATED at 12:45 p.m. May 23. 2011: Tickets are $49.50, $59.50 at the Roanoke Civic Center box office,HomeTownBankTix.com and (877) 482-8496.

Angler's Dream Come True on The Obsession Fishing Charter

This blog has nothing to do with the Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast, except that these are the loins of which I was born, yeah I was born fightin'!

Dad in the fightin' chair!
Allow me to digress from B&B stuff and share with you part of this innkeeper's life, here is Mom and Dad fishing on The Obsession fishing boat with Supreme Captain Jeff and all knowing First Mate Richard in the warm Gulf Stream, out of the Outer Banks, NC.

Dad refuses to get a digital camera and if you know the extreme fortitude it takes to get any photos when "A FISH IS ON!" you would understand that these are amazing photos!
Dad's Blue Marlin estimated to be around 700 lbs

The catch of a lifetime for Dad and The Obsession!

Blue Marlin caught from The Obsession - released, and then it charged the boat
Blue Marlin flag flyin' proud on The Obsession
Mom and Dad center - Mom's gaffer Dolphin-fish (Mahi Mahi)
Here is the fishing report from Capt Jeff of The Obsession. There is no better boat, no better Captain and Crew! As I type this Tony is out grilling the Mahi Mahi steaks Mom and Dad gave us (in olive oil of course).  http://www.obsession-charters.com/

FISHING REPORT 051911: Started off along a weed line that looked good but was not holding a lot of fish....boat up ahead of me hooked a few bigeye tuna and we got up there an hooked a dolphin...slowed up to catch that and had a mako shark eat a bait, then two bigeyes....one bigeye tuna pulled the hook after 5 minutes....the shark bit us off after 10 minutes, and an hour later, Chris Cunningham, from Farmville, VA boated a 171 lb bigeye tuna......not a bad start......fished the line for the next 4 hours and picked out about 20 nice dolphin......then an explosion behind the right short rigger big bait..... HOOKED UP BIG BLUE MARLIN!!! Gary Coffman, from Rocky Mount, VA hopped in the chair and the battle was on.....I called the fish 600 after the first few jumps..... a half hour later and several jumps close to the boat more, mate Richard got hold of the leader and the fish took him from side to side of the boat but he laid it along side for everyone to get a good look and then cut the leader.....fish was an easy 600+ and I feel like it was right at 700 lbs....hopefully we will get to see some pictures in the next day or so.....Gary did a great job angling and was a dream come true for him.

Learn more about the Blue Marlin from NatGeo here - avg size tends to be 200 to 400 lbs

NY Times article on Virginia's Crooked Road

Articles About Music
On Virginia’s Crooked Road, Music Lights the Way
Through the farmland, pastures and one-light towns along Virginia’s Crooked Road, there is a single, unifying sound: old-time, foot-tapping homegrown music.

Rocky Mount is the official first stop on this music trail, the first kiosk with narration and history by Joe Wilson is just one block behind The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast.  Rocky Mount and Franklin County Virginia have more weekly jams than any other community along this music trail.

Come on out and experience these Blue Ridge Mountains, meet the people and unique culture that makes this such an amazing place! While you are here, treat yourself to some mountains vistas, hiking, biking, picnicking as well!  This is the South y'all, remember more battles were fought in Virginia than any other state in the Civil War, which began 150 years ago.
