Eighteen of the 25 moonshine stills destroyed last month by agents with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were in Franklin County.

ABC agents also confiscated five gallons of untaxed liquor at one Franklin County still site, according to Special Agent in Charge Chris Goodman with ABC.

A joint air and ground operation with ABC and the Virginia State Police on March 15, 16, 26 and 27 resulted in the discovery and destruction of 25 operational but inactive moonshine stills in Franklin, Pittsylvania and Carroll counties.

Franklin County ABC Special Agents Mark Scott and Bev Whitmer coordinated the operation in which agents flew over 51 predetermined sites, 37 of which were in Franklin County, as the result of two years of investigation and surveillance, Goodman said.

Agents seized and destroyed 800- and 400-gallon black pot stills, as well as other paraphernalia used in the manufacture and distribution of illegal whiskey, Goodman said.

Criminal indictments will be sought in Franklin County for several suspects for possession of distilling apparatus, possession of untaxed liquor and felony firearms violations by a convicted felon, Goodman added. the article with photo of a still here.
