Smith Mountain Lake State Park Hiking Trails

As a family (Claiborne House Innkeepers) we decided to do the First Day Hike this year at nearby Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
We have two lakes nearby and within our Franklin County, Smith Mountain Lake and Philpott Lake, and adjacent to Philpott is the fun Fairy Stone State Park with it's little lake and park amenities.

We hiked the Turtle Island Trail at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Why winter? Why not!

As I say Winter is a great time of year, no mozzies, no snakes, no ticks, no crowds, no sunburn, no sweat, no problem.

These are fantastic lakes to visit in every season, the young loons are at Smith Mountain Lake right now, and both state parks have wonderful birding trails.

There are 13 hiking trails at Smith Mountain Lake State Park ranging from half a mile to three miles long. Trails meander through the park’s various features, including hardwood forests, pine forests, secluded coves and picturesque vistas. They are open year-round during daylight hours. (update here)

The weather was iffy, rain was forecasted, but it turned out to be a great cool day for hiking. Directions from The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast to Smith Mountain Lake State Park below (approx 50 minutes drive):
